Vicki & Nate

How It All Started

In late 2009, Vicki asked a dear friend Danny Cohen about taking a UCB improv class. Among other benefits, Danny pointed out that she would probably meet some guys. Vicki thought to herself, “I can’t believe I am taking love advice from Danny.” But she shrugged and signed up for a class.

By March 2010, Colin Rich had moved to L.A. after graduating from Michigan. He subletted a room from a ragtag group of recent Michigan graduates that referred to themselves as the Wigwam, where Vicki was living. (All the other good names were taken.) Colin’s good friend Nate Cramton conveniently lived around the corner and they explored L.A. together frequently. An avid lover of all things L.A., Nate had recently read an L.A. Magazine article about Upright Citizens Brigade, an improv theater group founded by Matt Besser, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts and Amy Poehler. So when Colin asked Nate if he wanted to see Vicki’s UCB grad show, Nate said, “I don’t know who Vicki Higgins is, but I’ve been meaning to check out UCB”.

Nate was so impressed by Vicki’s sharp wit that he immediately signed up for a class. When Vicki found out that he was taking classes because of her, fueled by ego and flattery, she attended his subsequent grad shows over the next two years. After the creation of his improv practice group Sean Bennett, Vicki and Nate started to see each more and more, which led to their first date watching the entire first season of Portlandia in one sitting. After that, there were never apart. #PutABirdOnIt

The Proposal

In mid-December 2014, Vicki opened a Christmas card addressed to both Vicki and Nate. It read, “Merry Christmas and congratulations on your engagement!” They were not yet engaged. She showed it to Nate, who quickly shrugged it off.

The week passed without much fanfare. That Saturday, on a short hike at Lake Hollywood. Nate kept checking his phone until Vicki told him to put it away. They left and went to Sunset Beer Co, a favorite local beer shop, when Nate suddenly received a phone call. He jumped up claiming it was work, which Vicki thought was odd but let it go.

The next day they went for another hike up Bronson Canyon with the notorious Eeyore. As you may already know, Eeyore has a habit of climbing to the top of  a hill and then refusing to come back down. As they reached a peak, Vicki asked to turn around but Nate pressed on. They reached a gorgeous vista point and took a breather. When Vicki turned away to make sure Eeyore didn’t fall off a cliff, she turned back to find Nate on one knee, ring in hand. He asked “Will You Marry Me?”, and she said YES. Turns out that "business call" Nate got the day before was Tom and Alicia Higgins giving him their official permission to ask their daughter's hand in marriage. Nate and Vicki grabbed the nearest hiker and took a happy picture with a reluctant Eeyore. But Eeyore got his wish, rolling around in fresh manure and the next hour was spent carrying a stinky 45 lb puppy down the hill. Eventually they reached the bottom and had celebratory drinks!
